What is a 'Zine'? It's short for "magazine" or "fanzine". Enter the world of small press publishing by creating your own zines and mini-comics! Zines can be about almost anything and are a DIY art form, allowing for personal expression and community building. Do you love insects or space travel, baking cakes or map making, the latest movies or mountain biking? No matter what you are most curious about or love to do, you can find ways to share what you enjoy in a Zine. We'll explore different components of self-publishing --- printmaking, page layout, comic creation, graphic design, book-binding, collage making and more. At the end of the term, we may trade, share, and even sell copies of our Zines  to get them out in our school community.  Instructor: Bonnie Cooper

MATH COUNTS TEAM
Join SLArts Math Counts to discover the inherent beauty of math while preparing for the Math Counts Competition in February! This is not math tutorial for added support, but rather a group of math-letes who love extending their skills, strength, and collaborative mathematical thinking and problem solving to new problems each week. We practice with timed problems, learning strategies, teamwork, and more. The group continues to the State competition in late February (and potentially beyond!) with 10 students who comprise the final team. If Math is your thing, this is for you!
Instructors: Sarah Gronlund & welcoming back Ann Simms, both current and former Math teachers at SLArts!
~ Open to Grades 6, 7 & 8th graders, but primarily Upper Grades who have covered & are comfortable with advanced concepts and are eligible to compete later this year
Begins this coming Monday, October 27  and continues until the competition in late February.

STORYTELLING WORKSHOP
In this course, students develop their voice, explore their interests, and refine their storytelling skills. Learn what makes a good story, and practice crafting your own stories through written and oral exercises. Build stories together and independently, read fiction excerpts to see how professional writers execute the storytelling craft, and let your words spill onto the page to refine and grip your reader. You'll have the option to share the stories you create, and get to hear your fellow writers share their own. We all have stories to tell, refine your craft with this fun storytelling experience! EXTENDED DAY
Downtime AFTER our enrolled after school classes, this unstructured, but supervised time is different than Homework Hall or our other activity-based classes. Socialize, play games, and just hang out until a parent or pick-up arrives. If your child does not head out by themselves for the bus, biking, walking, carpool or TRAX, this is a great option AFTER our other AFTER SCHOOL offerings. In the fall, we will primarily be outside on the north courtyard. Our school wide Cell Phone Policy is still part of our day and students should NOT have their phones out even during this time of day. Please text Kathleen if you need your child ready to leave immediately, otherwise they will see you pull up, or you may head up to the front door to come inside.
