Instruction includes the fundamentals of technique, reading notes & tabs, and playing chords. Once we start heading into Term 2, an Intermediate group is possible (on another afternoon) depending upon the range of skills, student interest & commitment.

PUZZLES & PROJECTS TO GROW YOUR MATH BRAIN!
Did you know toothpicks can help you learn algebra? Do you know how to build a pyramid with blocks? How to make a map of your classroom? Can you design and build a bridge that holds weight? Join this class and you will do it all. We will make shapes, build structures and learn to predict for even bigger shapes and structures.

Math puzzles inspire students mathematically and encourage mathematical development and problem-solving skills. They help develop number sense which moves students away from counting strategies and memorized formulas toward using numbers flexibly and developing problem solving skills. Student who use memorization as their primary strategy are lacking key concepts and connections in math, while students who can use numbers flexibly and learn to problem solve gain the tools needed to succeed in math, as well as other disciplines. Also, teamwork allows students to teach and challenge each other, to exchange ideas and learn concepts more deeply. Developing solutions on their own gives them confidence and satisfaction.

In this class we will work in teams to take on puzzles and projects to develop problem solving skills, number sense, and an understanding of geometric concepts in an open, inquiry-based manner. All students will be challenged and all students will learn, feel successful, and have fun! (This is not a class to complete math homework, but rather to focus on the dynamic, fun group work.) TUESDAY  FALL SEMESTER OFFERINGS

WALKING THE STAR WARS GALAXY
'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker', the 9th (and final) movie installment of the beloved series, will be rolling out to theaters this coming December 2019! However, students will do far more than be watching movies in anticipation for this. In this class-- where questions and theories about what might happen can bring in some passionate opinions-- we will explore a number of these ideas & theories, look at the Star Wars comics storylines compared to the movies (and look for clues!), examine how the different Directors have told the cinematic versions in different ways, and, generally speaking, we'll be skywalking our way through the SW Universe. Film-Maker, Mr. Holley, has his own opinions about this fun, 'director's medium' .... will you agree or find strong evidence of your own? Come find out with other fans! (And, of course, we will have a bit of film time, too.)
