Description: Gilder Lehrman Book Breaks features the most exciting history scholars in America discussing their books with host Gena Oppenheim live, followed by a Q&A with home audiences.
In 1850, California’s new state constitution outlawed slavery. Yet California also had a long history of—and an ongoing commitment to— facilitating different forms of unfree labor. Jean Pfaelzer takes on the challenge of making sense of this apparent contradiction in California, a Slave State. Pfaelzer shifts our understanding of slavery as a North-South struggle and focuses on how those who were enslaved in California fought, fled, and resisted human bondage. This new book places the histories of indentured Native American ranch hands in the Spanish missions, children sent to Indian boarding schools, Black miners, kidnapped Chinese prostitutes, and convict laborers center stage.
