Mindy Cook, Special Education Director / Electives Teacher
I LOVE the SLArts community and am so honored to continue wearing my many hats as Special Education Director, electives teacher, and 8th grade advisor.
I grew up moving all over the west coast between Washington and California. Over twenty years ago, I planted roots in Salt Lake City Utah where I’m proud to call home. I have a wide range of special education teaching experience. I have been a special education paraprofessional, an elementary resource teacher, a mild/moderate self-contained classroom teacher, and a district level special education consultant. My current position as Special Education Director is a great combination of my work experience and skill sets.
As SLArt’s Special Education Director, I am a passionate defender of student rights. I believe strongly in inclusion with the understanding that this looks different for each individual child. Special education is a basic human right that should be provided in all settings by all adults. My continued goal is to create an environment where all children feel seen and heard.
My work at SLArts has slowly expanded to include teaching elective courses open to all students curious to learn more about executive functioning which includes identifying, managing, and organizing physical and emotional needs.
However, my favorite role at SLArts is my weekly responsibility as an 8th grade advisor. I love connecting with students, challenging them to take healthy risks among their peers, and providing an additional safe space in the building. At home I am supported by a loving husband, our two children, and two small dogs. Live music, traveling, and being silly with my family are some of my favorite things on this planet. I always have a puzzle in the works on my coffee table and at least three books by the side of my bed. Students will tell you my favorite treat is a cold coke with a straw and lots of ice.
I look forward to connecting with you at SLArts!
