Being on Time and Attendance
We want to take a moment to highlight something that makes a big difference in your student’s day: arriving to school and class on time.
Why it Matters
The first 15 minutes of class are some of the most important. This is when teachers review key skills, introduce new concepts, and help students settle into a focused, ready-to-learn mindset. When students arrive late, they miss this critical transition, making it harder to engage for the rest of the lesson.
For students in 5th–8th grade, being on time builds essential habits — independence, organization, confidence, and consistency. This is especially true in 5th grade, a pivotal year when students practice the routines and habits that support success throughout middle school.
Why Attendance Overall Matters
Consistent attendance helps students learn with their peers, build friendships and strong teacher relationships, gain confidence, and develop habits that last a lifetime. Missing even two days a month adds up to nearly a month of lost learning over the school year.
How Families Can Help
- Small routines can make mornings smoother:
- Keep a consistent wake-up time
- Set alarms early enough for breakfast and getting ready
- Pack backpacks and choose clothes the night before
- Have a backup plan if transportation falls through
- Schedule appointments outside of school hours when possible
- Let the school know whenever your student will be absent
