Jeremy Theriot (MrT) - Science 7

Raised by educators during my middle school years, I had an interest in teaching, but I didn’t pursue it right away. I attended Louisiana State University to study Biological Engineering, aiming to become a prosthetic limb designer. After graduating, I received a fellowship at UCLA to study Neuroengineering — because how else would I learn to develop brain-controlled motorized prosthetic limbs?

After earning my PhD, I moved to Utah and spent several years as a lab manager in the University of Utah’s Department of Neurology. Eventually, that latent interest in education bubbled back to the surface, and I chose to leave the research world to become a teacher.

I’ve been teaching at SLArts since 2020, and with my background in biological sciences and engineering, I’ve found the 7th grade science curriculum to be a perfect fit. My students take part in plenty of hands-on activities designed to build their skills in critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and time and resource management.

I (MrT) live in Sugarhouse with my wife (MrsT), my son (lowercase t), my daughter (little t), two cats, and fewer than 10 chickens. My classroom usually hosts a few fish and crawfish, and if I’m lucky, a spider or two. And if you ever stop by, be sure to greet my pet rock, Ignacio … if you can find him. He likes to hide!
