Student Medication at School
By law, Salt Lake Arts Academy personnel may NOT administer any type of medication to students, except as described below. We can offer students soap and water, band-aids (though not antibiotic ointment), and occasionally ice packs.
If students need an OTC medication* (such as ibuprofen) while at school:
✔ They may bring enough for one day to keep and use at school.
- Medications may NEVER be shared with anyone at school.
- Medications must be put away, preferably in their locked locker.
✔ If a larger supply is needed at school, and/or if school personnel are to administer the OTC medication:
- Medication must stay in the office.
- It must be treated like a prescription medication (see below).
If students need a prescription medication while at school:
✔ We MUST have a Student Medication Form on file for the current school year.
- Forms are available in the office and BELOW.
- They must be filled out/signed by both a parent and a physician.
- They must specify EACH authorized medication by name, indication, dosage, method to administer, and time/frequency of administration.
✔ The medication must be kept locked up in the office.
✔ Students may carry certain emergency prescription medications such as inhalers and epi-pens, if this is noted by their physician and parent on their Student Medication Form.
*OTC means over-the-counter - i.e., available from a store or pharmacy without a prescription.
