SLArts Faculty and Staff are seeing an increase in violent and inappropriate humor being shared within our community. We are concerned with the desensitized language we are hearing from, and winessing in, our young people.  Many adolescents are experiencing increased exposure to violent images and violent language in video games, movies, social media, and real life.  During this important time of their development, kids can become desensitized to violence, through repeated exposure to these images and language.

By "desensitized" we mean students losing empathy for others, and experiencing a decrease in a  typical physical and emotional reactivity to violence.  When a person is "desensitized" to violence, their understanding of others’ feelings and thoughts decreases. Thus, their ability to interact with friends, peers, teachers, etc and build a healthy community may be inhibited. What this looks like in school could be "joking" about violent acts (shootings, murders, beating people up); ignoring other students' boundaries; teasing others; and other behaviors that demonstrate low empathy for others' experiences. This is not about politically correct terms; it is about helping students understand that their words and actions matter. We also want to help our adolescents understand that wanting to be "part of the group" is totally normal, and we need to be responsible for our own words and actions, even in a group setting.

SLArts is working to address these issues through actively teaching and learning about the nationwide issue of desensitization, increasing students' ability to think critically, and building a support network within our school community.
